“Day of Caring” Benefits TURN Programs
United Way of Salt Lake Day of Caring, held on September 10, turned out more than 2,700 volunteers from 97 companies who performed 122 service projects in Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele Counties. On the same day, United Way of Dixie mobilized nearly 80 volunteers who carried out projects for 9 nonprofit agencies in St. George and Washington City.

Overall, for nearly 90 community volunteers who performed projects for TURN, and the 300 or more clients and staff members who participated in events from Clinton to St. George, the day holds warm memories and lasting benefits. This year’s projects and key organizers included:

  • Local598MenUtah Plasterers and Cement Masons/Local 598 (Kevin Coté, Local 568 Business Representative, and Angel Valadez, International Field Representative) extended a driveway and repaired a section of sidewalk at the Clinton group home.
  • UPS Freight (Kelly Williams, Administrative Assistant in Human Resources) painted a carport and storage shed at TURN’s Liberty Park home in downtown Salt Lake City.
  • Workers Compensation Fund of Utah (Rachel Lewis, Marketing Director) hosted a picnic and games at Jordan Park in Salt Lake City for TURN Day Program clients.
  • JacobsenConstructionCrewJacobsen Construction Company (Sheridan Sullivan, Executive Assistant, and Mike Argyle, Warehouse Manager) constructed a 24’ X 38’ block patio area, and a 20’ sidewalk at TURN’s Midvale Day Center.
  • Southwest Federal Credit Union/Made in Brazil Restaurant (Marion Smith, Credit Union Branch President, and Jeff Tuscano, Director of Restaurant Operations) teamed up for an exterior painting project at TURN’s 24 West Men’s group home.

Yellowstone National Park Trip
On October 5th, twelve TURN adventurers and their support staff of five took to the road to experience the autumn grandeur of Yellowstone National Park. Under the leadership of Eleanor Houston-Till, TURN Recreation Therapist, they ‘set up camp’ at a lodge in West Yellowstone. During the three day trip, the group visited the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, attended a presentation about Yellowstone at the IMAX, and traveled to Old Faithful and other park sites. To their surprise and delight, the weather was chilly but beautiful, and the wildlife was abundant.

TURN’s annual “Pastabilities” dinner proceeds help fund recreation scholarships for people whom the agency supports. The scholarships allow individuals to enjoy a wide range of recreational adventures and leisure activities which, because of their expense, might otherwise be unaffordable to many. For more information, or to inquire about contributing to TURN recreational opportunities, call Eleanor at (801) 524-8615.
