Summer Camps Need Donors

TURN’s Summer Camps make a difference for clients and their families.

Larry H. Miller, Tesoro and Sam’s Club Help Fund Camps

With the rising cost of fuel and supplies, three leading community supporters gave extremely thoughtful donations to help fund TURN’s youth summer camps. Larry H. Miller Charities, and Tesoro Refinery and Marketing Company, have contributed to the camp transportation budget by giving a $4,000 check and $1,000 worth of gas cards, respectively. During a staff meeting, Sam’s Club #6686 Manager, Vaughn Peterson presented a $500 gift to TURN Director of Program Services, Jodi Wells and Camp Coordinator, Andrea Baugh. The gift will be used to supplement much needed camp and activity supplies for nearly seventy-five youth.

United Way Helps Subsidize Summer Camp Hours

Crystal Davis, the single parent of a 15 year old autistic son, Chris, needed a summer program for him to attend when school was not in session and she was at work.  Before she found TURN, Crystal had to rely on conventional day care centers that claimed to know how to work with children with autism. She described one instance when she arrived at a center to find Chris alone in a room with the door barricaded shut with a table.  Crystal applied for services for Chris from the Division of Services for people with Disabilities nine years ago. Today, Chris is one thousands of Utahns still on the critical waiting list for services. Crystal sought numerous agencies for assistance before she was referred to TURN by a friend. TURN was granted United Way funding to help subsidize some hours for Chris to attend summer camp. But more is needed if Chris, and other non-funded children, are to attend camp next summer for more than a few hours a week .

Advanta Donation Supports Youth Camps

During a camp bowling outing in June, CRA Officer CoriOwens (pictured far left)hand-delivered an exceedinglygenerous check from Advanta Bank to TURN Executive Director, Phil Shumway(seated left) and Camp Coordinator, Andrea Baugh (standing right). While not new to TURN’s services, Owens enjoyed her first program activity and came awaywith a number of new, young friends. Saturday camp runs September through May, and summer camps are held weekdays from June through August in several locations. The programs provide meaningful activities while affording many low-income parents the ability to continue working during school vacations, or to have a Saturday off to clean house, enjoy a movie or go shopping.

TURN Summer Camper Profile

Jayden is being raised by his grandparents who have provided his care since he was diagnosed with autism at 18 months of age. 8 year old Jayden has an abundance of energy and loves to be constantly on the move. Jayden receives some funding which enables him to attend weekend and summer day camps. Camp offers Jayden the opportunity to engage in a number of his favorite past times, including climbing. Unlike school, Jayden is able to exercise his preference to interact with older peers at camp. And, most importantly, camp affords Jayden’s aging grandparents some much needed respite time .
