It took 70 volunteers to shop, wrap and deliver the bags carefully chosen and beautifully wrapped gifts to each person in need.

When Salt Lake ACT merged with TURN July 1, 2011, the Labor of Love program came to TURN. This season clearly demonstrates that regardless of where the program is located geographically, people will turn out to support it. TURN staff and board were heavily involved in sponsoring, shopping volunteering and delivering.

For the first time, we had the resources to support some very needy individuals in Provo, Ogden, Layton, Cedar City and St. George.

We are grateful again this year to Scott Davis and Steve Suite of Mountain West Small Business Finance for sponsoring 34 people from their offices in Salt Lake and Orem. A special thank you to the Mayne Foundation for their contribution.

As the coordinator of this program for the past 13 years, I was thrilled to have such a successful year and I look forward more such years in the future. To every volunteer, shopper, wrapper, donor and sponsor who participated I offer my deepest gratitude.

This is a challenging letter to write to each of you, the family members and advocates for the people who have chosen TURN Community Services’ supports. And yet, as the year draws to a close, I believe that it must be done. TURN needs your help to continue the wide array of services it provides. I am asking each of you, who have given so much already to your family member, to give some more.

TURN is recognized throughout Utah for the highly individualized supports it provides to people with intellectual disabilities. Many of these services are paid for through federal and state dollars, so why is the agency asking for more financial support? I do so because personalized supports are staff intensive. To TURN employees, your family member is a multi-faceted individual with personal priorities, preferences, and needs. The time and energy it takes to fulfill these hopes do not always fall in the “fee-for-service” model that governs TURN’s reimbursement.

Your financial gift to TURN will help to ensure that the agency is in a position to go beyond contracted services and provide the highly individualized supports that bring joy and meaning into the lives of the 615 people who look to TURN. As you celebrate this season of giving, please consider supporting the agency you and your family member have come to depend on.

The Board of TURN Community Services sends its best wishes for joyous holidays and a satisfying new year.

Mary Grace Miner

The leaves haven’t fallen from our trees and the zombies are still hiding in the shadows, but my thoughts have turned to seasonal giving. TURN is in the midst of its annual fund drive. Mailings have gone out to the agency’s families and friends. Have you returned yours? My fellow Board members have already committed over $2,500.00 of their resources and I would ask you to step up too. In a time of austerity, with threats to social services’ funding already a reality, your gifts will be gratefully received and carefully used.

As a result of the recent merger between ACT of Salt Lake and TURN, we are also seeking funds and in-kind donations for the Labor of Love. This holiday tradition brings Christmas to people with intellectual disabilities. Over 125 low-income Utahns and their families are often living “without a safety net” and can not afford even the smallest joys of Christmas. Please give what you can – a gift card from a big box store, a check, or shop for designated items on a Christmas wish list. All people who receive Labor of Love support are carefully screened by TURN managers and all monies received are spent on the individuals and families themselves.

You can go online to TURN’s website to donate or mail your gifts to TURN’s main office in Salt Lake (Box 1287, Salt lake City, UT 84110-1287). Make checks out to TURN and note on the memo line whether the donation is for the Annual Fund or the Labor of Love. Thank you for caring and remember that all donations are tax deductible.

As always I thank TURN’s Board members and our staff for their generosity and professionalism.
