25th Annual Pastabilities Dinner

Light It Up Blue in Utah
Westminster College hosts an event to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Richer Commons. Light It Up Blue, in its third year, is a unique global initiative to help raise awareness about autism. Iconic landmarks around the world will be illuminated with blue lights. This year, Westminster’s Converse Hall will be lit up in blue to show support for this initiative.
According to the Center for Disease Control, one in every 88 children have autism. In Utah, the numbers are even higher. Come join Westminster and University of Utah students as they help raise awareness for this significant disorder. The event will include food, music, prizes, and information about autism spectrum disorders. The lights in Converse will be lit at 8 p.m. and blue glow sticks will be provided to the first 200 participants.
“Westminster’s event is a grassroots movement initiated by a college student with Aspergers,” explained Shamby Polychronis, Ph.D., assistant professor in Westminster’s School of Education. “It is exciting to be a part of this global event because it provides opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders and supports Westminster College’s commitment to promote advocacy for diversity and inclusiveness”.
* The event is free and open to the public *

City Center for the Arts: Open House is a Success!
On Friday, March 16th, the TURN City Center for the Arts celebrated its grand opening by hosting a community Open House. The event was attended by over 60 people, including people with disabilities, families, local dignitaries, and community members. Three interested and potential participants toured of the facility, and one has already begun attending. In addition there were Support Coordinators in attendance who were interested in the Center for the people they serve.
In the evening, the Center was part of Gallery Stroll, a monthly event where community members and patrons of the arts can walk among art galleries and view and purchase artists’ work. Through Gallery Stroll, TURN artists will receive ongoing exposure to the Salt Lake arts community, and Stroll participants can learn about TURN.
The City Center program focuses on the arts, including music, drama, dance, visual arts, poetry, playwriting, film, photography, storytelling, Toastmasters, costume design, and more. The goal of the TURN City Center for the Arts Program is to empower people with disabilities to express themselves in artistic ways, and to experience and learn art forms in which they have not participated in the past.

We have a beautiful new location for our South Davis County day training program. The TURN Community Center in Farmington is centrally located in Davis County, very close to the Lagoon Amusement Park, Cherry Hill Camping Resort, and new Farmington Park Station business and shopping development. This location offers many opportunities for increased community involvement, participation, and integration for the people we serve.

The new space itself is light and airy and beautiful. We have set aside space in the building for our in-center contract work, which we hope to expand, as well as for the seniors program we are building as some of our long-term clients get older. Not only do we hope to increase the outreach our clients perform in the community, but we also hope to engage the community in our mission by increasing our volunteer opportunities at the center for community members.

The accomplished TURN Jazters, our Special Olympics Team, looks forward to practicing in and around our new location. Our team really enjoys training for and competing in track and field, bowling, and golf, and team members are excited to compete in the new sport they’ve started practicing: Bocce ball!
Join us in our Open House celebration of our new space and new adventure!

24th Annual Pastabilities Extravaganza Great Success
Contributed by Esther Lacherre, Therapeutic Recreation Intern, University of Utah
This year’s annual “Pastabilities” fundraiser was held on May 14. It was a very rainy Saturday evening; however, the rain did not seem to put a damper on the event, as the night gave way to a grand event full of fun and excitement, prizes and games, music and dancing, and of course an array of amazing food!
One of the most engaging parts of the event was the talented DJ, Henry Neville, mixing it up with a variety of fun, lively music that drew numerous people out onto the dance floor. The dance floor stayed hoppin’ all night long as energetic participants got a chance to show off their dance moves. And all the while, a big screen featured live video coverage and photos of the night’s events, captured and produced by Dave Brooke.
There was truly something for everyone to enjoy at this event. Besides the music and dancing, very generous donors contributed to the dozens of fabulous silent auction items and raffle prizes. There were also carnival games with prizes and a boutique that showcased the artistic talents of many clients through their handcrafted items available for purchase. And of course there was plenty of time to mingle with good company amidst scrumptious food. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the coveted “Pastabilities” volunteer aprons. This year’s recipients were Kathy Hale, Board Vice-Chair; Chris Topham, Sugarhouse Program Coordinator; and Earl Horne, Bountiful Apartments.
The time, talent and resources given by numerous people made it possible for many employees, clients, community members, friends and family members to come together in support of people with disabilities. Robert Sullivan and the Utah Food Services staff are major supporters of this event as they contribute their time and resources.
The proceeds from this fundraiser will enable TURN’s clients to enjoy the many recreation and leisure activities that go on throughout the year, including the Holiday over-night retreats.

PGA Tour’s “Utah Championship” Benefits TURN
TURN Community Services will be one of the featured charities selling tickets for this year’s “Utah Championship”, the only PGA-sanctioned golf tournament in Utah. The PGA Tour has long believed in giving back to local non-profits, and through its tournaments has raised over $1 billion for charity! Making a positive impact in communities where the PGA Tour tournaments are held and where players live has always been an essential element of the PGA Tour’s charitable mission. The Utah Championship, an official PGA Tour event on the Nationwide Tour, strives to do its part and partner with local Utah charities and help them raise donations through its event.
“We’ve always tried to make our event about more than just a ‘golf tournament’ and the Tickets FORE Charity™ program is a key element that allows us to do that,” said Tournament Director Mike Smith. “Utah golf fans have the opportunity to buy a ticket to see some of the best golfers in the world, and 90 percent of the money they spend on tickets stays in our community and helps these deserving charities.” Last year, Salt Lake area non-profits raised nearly $20,000 for their programs by selling tickets to the Utah Championship!
A TURN Opportunity: TURN Community Services employees and Board Members can sell tickets to the Utah Championship, and 90% of the proceeds stays with TURN! That’s right, 90% of all ticket sales we help generate for the Utah Championship stays with our organization! Tickets are
- $10 for a single day pass (TURN keeps $9!)
- $25 for the 4-day grounds pass (TURN keeps $22.50!)
Tickets are available NOW at the TURN office in Salt Lake. Please call Virginia Butler at 801-359-8876.
Help us sell HUNDREDS of tickets and raise THOUSANDS of dollars for TURN programs!
There are also many unique volunteer opportunities available at the Utah Championship; the event depends on over 300 volunteers each year! Go to www.utahchampionship.com for information.

Mitch Vosburg has been attending TURN day programs since 1986. When he had to go into a care center in 2009, he missed his friends at the day program that he had treasured for so many years. So, later that year, he was able to come back to the Woods Cross day program part-time.
Mitch loves holding onto hair scrunches and a deck of cards that he plays with. He enjoys Special Olympic bowling and track and field, but he cannot participate in the actual track and field games because of the heat. However, he enjoys practicing when there is cooler weather. Mitch loves being with his friends at the day program, participating in the activities, and going out in the community. He does not speak but he communicates his joy through a big smile on his face!
