As this program opens and develops, we look forward to forging many partnerships with members of the arts community and students of the arts. Through collaborative classes, projects, performances, and exhibits, we hope to help the people we serve and the local community to interact in a mutually enriching way.

We plan to open the TURN City Center for the Arts during the month of February, and open houses will be held at dates and times to be announced. For more information about this program, email Colin Coker at colincoker@turndreams.org.

Contributed by Esther Lacherre, Therapeutic Recreation Intern, University of Utah

This year’s annual “Pastabilities” fundraiser was held on May 14. It was a very rainy Saturday evening; however, the rain did not seem to put a damper on the event, as the night gave way to a grand event full of fun and excitement, prizes and games, music and dancing, and of course an array of amazing food!

One of the most engaging parts of the event was the talented DJ, Henry Neville, mixing it up with a variety of fun, lively music that drew numerous people out onto the dance floor. The dance floor stayed hoppin’ all night long as energetic participants got a chance to show off their dance moves. And all the while, a big screen featured live video coverage and photos of the night’s events, captured and produced by Dave Brooke.

There was truly something for everyone to enjoy at this event. Besides the music and dancing, very generous donors contributed to the dozens of fabulous silent auction items and raffle prizes. There were also carnival games with prizes and a boutique that showcased the artistic talents of many clients through their handcrafted items available for purchase. And of course there was plenty of time to mingle with good company amidst scrumptious food. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the coveted “Pastabilities” volunteer aprons. This year’s recipients were Kathy Hale, Board Vice-Chair; Chris Topham, Sugarhouse Program Coordinator; and Earl Horne, Bountiful Apartments.

The time, talent and resources given by numerous people made it possible for many employees, clients, community members, friends and family members to come together in support of people with disabilities. Robert Sullivan and the Utah Food Services staff are major supporters of this event as they contribute their time and resources.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will enable TURN’s clients to enjoy the many recreation and leisure activities that go on throughout the year, including the Holiday over-night retreats.

TURN Community Services will be one of the featured charities selling tickets for this year’s “Utah Championship”, the only PGA-sanctioned golf tournament in Utah. The PGA Tour has long believed in giving back to local non-profits, and through its tournaments has raised over $1 billion for charity! Making a positive impact in communities where the PGA Tour tournaments are held and where players live has always been an essential element of the PGA Tour’s charitable mission. The Utah Championship, an official PGA Tour event on the Nationwide Tour, strives to do its part and partner with local Utah charities and help them raise donations through its event.

“We’ve always tried to make our event about more than just a ‘golf tournament’ and the Tickets FORE Charity™ program is a key element that allows us to do that,” said Tournament Director Mike Smith. “Utah golf fans have the opportunity to buy a ticket to see some of the best golfers in the world, and 90 percent of the money they spend on tickets stays in our community and helps these deserving charities.” Last year, Salt Lake area non-profits raised nearly $20,000 for their programs by selling tickets to the Utah Championship!

A TURN Opportunity: TURN Community Services employees and Board Members can sell tickets to the Utah Championship, and 90% of the proceeds stays with TURN! That’s right, 90% of all ticket sales we help generate for the Utah Championship stays with our organization! Tickets are

$10 for a single day pass (TURN keeps $9!)

$25 for the 4-day grounds pass (TURN keeps $22.50!)

Tickets are available NOW at the TURN office in Salt Lake. Please call Virginia Butler at 801-359-8876.

Help us sell HUNDREDS of tickets and raise THOUSANDS of dollars for TURN programs!

There are also many unique volunteer opportunities available at the Utah Championship; the event depends on over 300 volunteers each year! Go to www.utahchampionship.com for information.

This year’s picnic was everything it promised to be and more! Entertainment was provided by the “Old Leather” band (featuring board members Jim and Janet Witherspoon), and Cowboy Poet Gary Fulton. Jim is lead guitar, Janet is lead vocalist and Gary Fulton adds cowboy poetry as well as his instrumental talents. Janet learned to play and sing country with her parents and performed at care centers. Jim joined Janet in the performances when they became a couple. Shortly after moving into their home in South Jordan, one of the neighbors, upon finding out they like to perform, introduced them to Gary and for nearly 10 years the trio has been performing in competition and at events. Recently they performed for the Provo School District. They are fun, talented and popular with their audiences.

Guests were also enchanted by the appearance of Mrs. Utah America, Ashalon Goodrich. The mother of a 5-year old son with autism, Ashalon is on her way to compete in the Mrs. America Pageant early in September.
