Mark your calendar! 24th Annual “Pastabilities” Dinner
Once again, Phil Shumway invites employees, friends, families, and community partners (old and new) to Pastabilities. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2011. Dinner will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Salt Palace Convention Center, meeting room #155, spaces A through F.
Tickets are $15.00, or $7.00 for children (12 years and under) and are available through advanced purchase or at the door. We are offering a family rate for those in your immediate household. A family of four is $50.00 plus $5.00 for each additional person.
There will be a silent auction, door prize drawings, handicraft booth (featuring work by TURN client artisans), and carnival-style games for the kids and the “young-at-heart.” For the 24th consecutive year, Pastabilities will be headed up by Eleanor Houston-Till, Therapeutic Recreation Therapist.
Proceeds from the event help fund Thanksgiving and Christmas overnight activities for clients who are unable to spend the holidays with family. Funds also provide assistance for river trips, camping, out-of-state trips, special events, socialization classes, and recreation equipment for individuals with limited incomes.
For more information contact Eleanor at 801-359-8876.

TURN’s Annual End of Summer Picnic
TURN’s annual End of Summer Picnic was held Saturday, August 28 at the Rice Terrace in Liberty Park. This year’s picnic was everything it promised to be and more! Entertainment was provided by the “Old Leather” band (featuring board members Jim and Janet Witherspoon), and Cowboy Poet Gary Fulton. Jim is lead guitar, Janet is lead vocalist and Gary Fulton adds cowboy poetry as well as his instrumental talents. Janet learned to play and sing country with her parents and performed at care centers. Jim joined Janet in the performances when they became a couple. Shortly after moving into their home in South Jordan, one of the neighbors,
upon finding out they like to perform, introduced them to Gary and for nearly 10 years the trio has been performing in competition and at events. Recently they performed for the Provo School District. They are fun, talented and popular with their audiences.
Guests were also enchanted by the appearance of Mrs. Utah America, Ashalon Goodrich. The mother of a 5-year old son with autism, Ashalon is on her way to compete in the Mrs. America Pageant early in September.

Mitch Vosburg has been attending TURN day programs since 1986. When he had to go into a care center in 2009, he missed his friends at the day program that he had treasured for so many years. So, later that year, he was able to come back to the Woods Cross day program part-time.
Mitch loves holding onto hair scrunches and a deck of cards that he plays with. He enjoys Special Olympic bowling and track and field, but he cannot participate in the actual track and field games because of the heat. However, he enjoys practicing when there is cooler weather. Mitch loves being with his friends at the day program, participating in the activities, and going out in the community. He does not speak but he communicates his joy through a big smile on his face!
